Cattle Herd Rebuilding Has Begun Corn prices hit their lowest level in three years recently, providing relief to feeders. On top of that, pasture conditions have improved from the drought. Less than a third, or 29 percent, of U.S. pasture was rated very poor or poor in October, which compares to 54 percent in October 2012. Winter wheat conditions in the southern Plains are 80 percent fair to excellent. That is providing relief to producers. Slaughter is down across the board; total head (shown above) are below 600,000, down 1.3 percent on the week and three percent in November.
