A high-level Chinese delegation is due to arrive in Washington, DC next week to engage in trade dispute negotiations that are scheduled to begin on 31 January. The fact that the group will be headed by Vice-Premier Liu, one of the architects of China’s trade and economic policies, is evidence of how seriously the Chinese government views the situation and efforts to resolve it. Although the formal negotiations are not until the end of the month, the two sides are likely in frequent communication at the staff level with some ideas being floated around to see what they attract.
