The International Grains Council’s Supply & Demand estimates indicate that global carryover of wheat and coarse grains will decline for a seventh year in a row. That seems like a startling fact. If the trend were to continue indefinitely, the world would run short of food. However, the overall stocks to use ratio remains a relatively comfortable 25 percent. Global production continues to expand and although food is not always situated where it is needed, there is ample surplus supply. With certain exceptions, global knowledge about actual supply and demand has increased, which builds confidence that more proactive stockpiling is unnecessary. ...

WPI’s team conducted a formal review of this decision and concluded that the current level of market saturation would limit the benefits of the investment. Based on WPI’s analysis and recommended actions, the board subsequently reversed its decision and undertook a strategic planning effort to identify more impactful investments.
