Fauxfundity EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström’s op-ed in the Wall Street Journal today contained oversight, invention and contradiction. She lamented that friends (the U.S.) do not impose tariffs on friends (the EU). However, the EU has never been friendly to U.S. agriculture. The commissioner next belittled U.S. trade policy by saying that it “is increasingly difficult to understand.” One would have to know nothing of trade policy or negotiation not to understand that Donald Trump is manufacturing leverage to ultimately extract better terms of trade for the U.S. Nations do not unilaterally concede such things. However, the most awkward argument by Malmström (and, apparently, also being made by her peers...
