USDA released its monthly Cattle on Feed (COF) report Friday, which showed the total number of cattle in feedlots with a capacity of more than 1,000 as of 1 February was 11.6 million head, or 108 percent of last year. This is the fourth consecutive month where cattle on feed inventories have exceeded 11 million head and it is also the largest February inventory in six years.
The January placement level was the largest in 12 years. An interesting point to note, the total inventory of cattle and calves on feed in feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity represents 82 percent of all cattle on feed. That figure is up from 81.2 percent this time last year.
