EU Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius says that Europe is now food secure and that sustainability and environment should take primacy over production agriculture. He is correct from the standpoint that global carryover stocks of the major agricultural commodities have grown by 90 percent over the past decade. Meanwhile, the world’s population grew only 5 percent over that same period.  However, Commissioner Sinkevičius is not an agricultural economist and likely does not appreciate how quickly a food fortune can disappear.
