The adage that “the devil is in the details” has been borne out twice in the past week. These instances involved USDA’s new GM labeling rule and the new hemp regulation. GM Labeling – Not included in these new USDA labeling strictures, which will begin a two-year phase-in period on 1 January 2020, is a requirement that highly-refined ingredients be indicated. This would include fats from vegetable oils such as corn and soybeans as well as sweeteners from sugar beets and corn fructose. Soybeans, corn, and sugar beets have an adoption rate of 90 percent or more when it comes to genetic modification.
