The adage that “the devil is in the details” has been borne out twice in the past week. These instances involved USDA’s new GM labeling rule and the new hemp regulation. GM Labeling – Not included in these new USDA labeling strictures, which will begin a two-year phase-in period on 1 January 2020, is a requirement that highly-refined ingredients be indicated. This would include fats from vegetable oils such as corn and soybeans as well as sweeteners from sugar beets and corn fructose. Soybeans, corn, and sugar beets have an adoption rate of 90 percent or more when it comes to genetic modification. Communicating importance of value-added products
Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
