The 2013/14 U.S. soybean crop year was a notable one for the soybean industry, and the new 2014/15 U.S. soybean year promises to be memorable as well.Lest it be overlooked, today is 2 September, the second day of the new 2014/15 crop year for U.S. soybeans (and corn, too). We are not aware of any celebrations that took place on 31 August, soybean's New Year's Eve, to commemorate the passing of the old 2013/14 year and the beginning of the New Year. That is too bad because this transition deserved to be celebrated. 2013/14 was a memorable year for U.S. soybeans. Despite less than favorable August weather, U.S. production rebounded to an estimated 3.29 billion bushels, 250 million more than 2012/13's drought-plagued crop. The 2013/14 average...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
