Farm groups are urging the Senate to also address an estate tax repeal, and Senator John Thune (R-South Dakota) has introduced a companion bill to the House version.The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill 17 April (240-172) to rescind the federal estate tax. The Joint Committee on Taxation estimates the repeal will cost the federal government $269 billion over the next 10 years. As we reported earlier in the year, the Obama administration proposed raising the estate tax rate to its 2009 levels as part of the president's budget submission to Congress.
