GOI Increases MSP The government of India (GOI) last week announced new minimum support prices (MSP) to jumpstart agricultural activity for the 2012/13 sowing season that began on 15 June 2012. GOI has tried to incentivize the production of oilseeds and pulses by bringing MSPs close to market prices. The MSP incentive for 2012/13 specifically has been given to corn, sorghum, pulses and oilseeds, and GOI has been encouraging farmers to produce non-staple, non-cereal crops for which there is demand. Overall, the price increases have been between 15.7 percent (paddy) to 53 percent (sorghum).However, higher MSPs also will increase the benchmark prices of commodities as well as fuel inflation. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
