Indian Subcontinent Regional Analysis

Higher Wheat Procurement Could Be Problematic In the first three weeks of the wheat procurement drive, state and central agencies have acquired more than 20 MMT at the set price of Rs.17,350/MT ($262/MT), which is higher than last year. Procurement is up in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana against last year but fairly slow in other states due to delayed harvest and damage in some belts. The total procurement was 30.824 MMT in wheat’s MY 2017/18, but the government of India (GOI) expects it to reach 33 MMT or higher this year (MY 2018/19) based on estimated production of 97.11 MMMT. As of 1 April 2018, the wheat stocks in the central pool stood at 13.231 MMT, much higher than anticipated as the pickup by states was much lower, versus 8.05...

From WPI Consulting

Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
