U.S. exports are swamped by the level of imports of lamb and mutton by a factor of 100 to one. Lamb and mutton imports in 2021 increased by 20.7 percent, versus a 7.6 percent increase in exports. Moreover, exports of less valuable mutton grew whereas lamb exports shrank. By contrast, lamb imports grew faster than mutton imports.
