Long Slow Process for 45Z Still Ongoing

Part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act was section 45Z, the Clean Fuels Production Credit. It is in effect from 1 January 2025 through 31 December 2027. At the time, this provision was hailed as a potential game changer for biofuels and feedstock production. The problem is guidance for qualifying for the credit has not yet been issued, stalling investment and preparation for taking advantage of 45Z. The credit replaces the biodiesel blenders credit which expires at the end of December, and renewable diesel and biodiesel producers have slowed production coming into Q4 2024 in order to take advantage of 45Z.
