The CBOT was expectedly quiet today ahead of the Christmas holiday. Fresh news was hard to come by overnight and the markets traded a tight range with little interest in making significant moves one way or another. The weather in South America remains friendly and Argentina’s drought risk is diminishing. Overall, there was the typical lack of trading interest and/or news to spark excitement at the CBOT. Yesterday’s Export Inspections report featured disappointing corn shipments but bullish soybean and wheat exports. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants.
