Corn Local corn markets remain dynamic as the harvest continues but at a delayed pace. Good weather last week allowed farmers to harvest an additional 4 percent, bringing the total harvest to 12 percent of planted area. The harvest is 14 percent behind this time in 2020. Further complicating the corn harvest is the fact that farmers are starting to harvest the first soybean plots. Once farmers switch their focus to soybeans (as happens every year) the corn harvest delay will only increase. The vessel lineup is 2.5 MMT for corn, which means additional harvest delays will create more problems for exporters and increase wait times and demurrage bills. This will support local corn prices as exporters will need to raise bids to originate...
Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
