Milking Future Demand

U.S. and Mexican dairy industry representatives met and renewed their commitment to “collaborate and advocate for mutually beneficial dairy policies. This was a policy initiative begun back in 2016. At first glance, the effort seems surprising given that Mexico exports more than three times as much dairy to the U.S. than the value of dairy shipped to Mexico from the U.S.  Both nation’s dairy industries are expanding at roughly the same rate but the U.S. industry is nearly eight times larger with per capita consumption dwarfing that of Mexico. The calculation is that as Mexico grows wealthier, its per capita consumption will expand faster than its domestic industry can support. Mexican dairy production is limited by climate...

Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
