More Livestock Eating Less USDA’s feed outlook report estimates grain consuming animal units (GCAUs) will total 99 million in 2017/18, up from 98.3 million projected in December 2017 and the 95.8 million predicted one year ago for 2016/17. A GCAU is a standard based on the dry-weight quantity of a feed consumed by the average milk cow, which is used to compare feed demand across species. The increased estimate is based on larger cattle, hog and broiler inventories.
