The acreage numbers used weren’t surprising. The talk over most of the winter has been that U.S. farmers want to plant more corn. There might be some external factors, though, that hold corn acres closer to unchanged from 2015 than up 2 million acres.Thank goodness for the USDA’s Outlook Forum this week as it provided some fresh numbers to look at, discuss and write about even though the outcome was well anticipated by the trade. Market analysts are desperately waiting for the end of winter around the Northern Hemisphere in the hope that something will bring any level of excitement back to the markets. There was nothing in yesterday’s supply/demand projections to indicate that might happen any time soon. The yield estimates used on the supp...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.

As WPI reported on 17 July, the recently passed budget reconciliation bill in the House Budget Committee includes $12 billion in emergency farm assistance. This would be the seventh of the past nine years with ad hoc farm payments (FY2018, FY2019, FY2020, FY2022, FY2023, FY2024, and potentially...
