USDA’s July estimate of U.S. hard red winter wheat production will likely be lower. We (and others) assume the Kansas harvested acreage number will be decreased. With that said, the drought-reduced southern Plains crop appears to be one of the best quality ones in a long time. Following two years of low protein and poor milling quality production, the 2018 crop is a clear winner. Test weights and protein content are high, and thousand-kernel counts are very high. Despite being small, those traits mean this crop is very desirable for blending the previous two years’ production, and it could actually result in more total usable supplies.
