New EU Commission; America First Channels Sovereignty

New EU Commission European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made known her nominees to run the government in Brussels and the trade and agriculture portfolios have interesting selections. As was speculated previously, Christophe Hansen from Luxembourg has been picked for the agriculture slot. It is notable because Luxembourg is a small country with very little agriculture. This may make it easier to balance the competing demands of the larger agriculture states, but it could also mean less understanding of the complexities of the sector. Especially since Hansen’s academic background is in geosciences and environment. It is also awkward since food security has been added to the DG-Agri role and Luxembourg is one of the riches...

Communicating importance of value-added products

Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
