New Trade Agreements

Just as Donald Trump’s dismantling of the world order is said to have motivated Europe’s conclusion of trade agreements with Mercosur and India, his trade agreements with India and Argentina are thought to have been motivated by Europe’s trade moves. A novel question: who is following whom? Either way, the result is globalization.  The agreement with Argentina is more than a “gentlemen’s agreement.” Like traditional FTAs, it is hundreds of pages long with nearly 500 pages on tariff rates alone. The language in the U.S.-Argentine agreement sounds strong enough on issues like SPS and technical barriers, but requires serious legal parsing. USTR claims precedent-setting measures, like access for U.S. pou...

From WPI Consulting

Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
