The focus now shifts to harvesting the huge U.S. soybean crop. Efforts are already underway in the Dakotas, but it will be two to three weeks before the harvest begins in most of the Midwest. However, there is a larger issue. A Huge U.S. Soybean Crop and Huge Demand Yesterday USDA surprised many by raising its forecast for the average U.S. soybean yield to 50.6 bushels/acre (3.4 MT/hectare), which resulted in a boost in its forecast for production to 4.201 billion bushels (114.34 MMT). If realized, that would be the largest U.S. soybean crop in history and 6.9 percent (272 million bushels) greater than the previous record set a year ago. It would also be 843 million bushels (22.943 MMT) more than the 2013 crop.Just a few years ago,...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
