Fire has been used to clear the land so that it can be converted into grassland to raise cattle. In some cases, the land has been cleared to raise dryland rice and later soybeans, but most of that occurred in the savannah-like Cerrados region typical in the state of Mato Grosso. This year there has been a media frenzy about the fires that are burning in Brazil as the number in the Amazon Basin are up from a year ago, but not anywhere near the number that occurred annually in the early 2000s. Consistent with WPI's findings, local production to supply the plant and the facility's output have expanded exponentially since the investment.
