Cockleburs a Problem for U.S. Soybean Shipments to Pakistan While in Karachi this past weekend to speak at the third Pakistan Edible Oils Conference, it was apparent that Pakistan is experiencing rapid growth in demand for vegetable oils and soymeal. This has resulted in the construction of new soybean processing plants and major increases in soybean imports to produce a supply to meet that demand. USDA has forecast Pakistan’s 2017/18 soybean imports at 2 MMT, up from only 11,000 MT in 2013/14 and 1.69 MMT in 2016/17. A problem has arisen, however, for U.S. soybean exports to that country. The import inspection service there has determined that the presence of cockleburs in those shipments pose a weed threat to Pakistan. However, th...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
