Oilseed Highlights: USDA Forecast Revisions; Brazil’s Weather Woes; Export Sales

USDA Cuts Forecast for U.S. Soybean Exports Again and Revises Other Estimates Today USDA unsurprisingly further reduced its forecast for U.S. soybean exports in 2017/18 by an additional 60 million bushels (1.633 MMT) to 2.1 billion bushels (57.16 MMT). With no other changes, the result was a 60-million-bushel increase in ending stocks to 530 million bushels (14.43 MMT), which equals a stocks-to-use ratio of 12.5 percent. USDA raised Brazil’s soybean crop by 2 MMT to 112 MMT and reduced Argentina’s from 56 MMT to 54 MMT. Considering private forecasters are now estimating the latter crop at 50-51 MMT, it can be argued that USDA was slightly too conservative in not lowering it even more. It made relatively few other revisions to...

Communicating importance of value-added products

Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
