Outclassed; Unifying Food Safety; Inflation’s Real Issue

Outclassed In a nearly five-hour hearing before the U.S. House Agriculture Committee, USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins proved again that she is one of the most politically astute of President Trump’s Cabinet members. She was adept at responding to a wide range of questions, nearly all of them friendly from the Republican members of the panel, and most of them polite from the Democratic side of the aisle. Rep. Jill Tokuda (D-Hawaii) tried the bulldog approach, firing out her Party’s talking points in machinegun fashion. But she was the exception.  Rep. Eugene Vindman (D-Virginia) tried his Party’s latest tactic of attacking Trump for causing inflation, such as causing higher input costs due to tariffs. He then tried to re...

Communicating importance of value-added products

Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
