Hogs and Pigs Report Coming USDA will release its quarterly hogs and pigs inventory report after trading closes today. The inventory as of 1 June is estimated to be 103 percent of the same period last year, and market hogs are forecast at 103.1 percent of year-ago levels. If realized, both would eclipse the previous records for the March-May quarter set in 2017 (the data goes back to 1964). Meanwhile, sows kept for breeding are estimated to be 101.7 percent of last year. The sector continues to expand with more hogs, pigs and slaughter capacity all coming. The focus moving forward, therefore, is on demand, which has been strong so far. Last week’s national negotiated swine price was $82.16/cwt, less than $86.35/cwt a year ago...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
