Soft Drink Taxes Need Study New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg stirred a wide array of opinions when he suggested limiting soft drink sales to 12 ounces. Apparently the matter is in dispute amongst academics as well. Chicago's Booth School of Business surveys national economists for their views on topical issues. The latest query to the panel was about the effectiveness of soft drink taxes in addressing obesity. What was notable was the split in opinion, even amongst those with direct expertise on such issues. Indeed, there was more divergence on this question than on most economic issues. Communicating importance of value-added products

Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
