Power of Agriculture In the 2016 presidential campaign, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) won a plurality but not a majority of Iowa Republican votes after saying he opposed the ethanol mandate or Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton said she supported “advanced biofuels,” which is code for something not ethanol, and avid ethanol supporter Donald Trump won the state. Candidates for president campaigning in Iowa this year are much more clearly supporting the agriculture agenda. Many of the major Democratic candidates are voicing their support for ethanol.
