Calling their bluff, President Donald Trump challenged his G7 partners to a trade agreement amongst the industrialist elite that would result in “no tariffs, no barriers ... and no subsidies.” It would be a difficult policy reach for relatively free trading Australia, let alone any of the G7 members, including the U.S. Yet it would be a more difficult policy reach for the non-U.S. indignant G6. It was classic Trump one-upmanship. Unfortunately, he left out the largest barrier to equilibrating G7 trade policy – nontariff trade barriers.  Note that Australia is only marginally smaller than Canada in population and economy, and yet is not a G7 member...
