In one of the odder developments, Congressional Democrats are complaining about a lack of consultation by USTR over trade policy pursuits like the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework and the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity. There are three incongruities about the situation:
Congressional Democrats claim to support the “worker-centric” objectives of the Biden trade policy. USTR Katherine Tai is a product of Capitol Hill and otherwise has close ties with the Democratic leadership. Some of the same Democrats complaining now squirmed over Donald Trump’s trade policy but praised USTR Robert Lighthizer for his efforts to consult with them.
