Tariffs were a hot topic in last night’s debate between the two U.S. presidential candidates. Trump first imposed tariffs, which Harris calls a sales tax, but her Administration keep most of them and she has not ruled out using them again. Trump added to his pro-tariff position by saying he would impose 100 percent tariffs on countries that leave the dollar, which is contradictory since at one point he said he wanted to devalue the dollar. Now members of Congress from both parties are pushing for an end to the de minimis exemption from import duties. WPI’s team was retained by the governing board of a U.S. industry organization to review a decision, reached by vote, to invest significant assets into the development and management of an export trading company. WPI’s team conducted a formal review of this decision and concluded that the current level of market saturation would limit the benefits of the investment. Based on WPI’s analysis and recommended actions, the board subsequently reversed its decision and undertook a strategic planning effort to identify more impactful investments.
