Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) continues to wreak havoc. So far this week (and it is only Wednesday), APHIS announced an outbreak in Texas in a commercial pheasant flock, there are three more suspected cases in North Carolina, and an outbreak of HPAI has been reported to APHIS from Iowa authorities; that case is a 5,011,726 bird broiler flock in Iowa – the second 5 million bird flock hit (the other was a layer operation). Moreover, there were two cases in Wyoming. Estimates are that of the 118 flocks impacted to date, about 72 are commercial flocks and 46 were backyard flocks. Communicating importance of value-added products
Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
