American farmers like to think they are innovative but when it comes to GMO wheat, it was Argentina that was the first mover. Bioceres’ drought resistant wheat has now been approved in Argentina, Australia, Brazil and the U.S. Given the impacts of climate change, it is likely to find approval in many other countries. Credit should be given to Argentina for taking the risk.  Argentina is not the largest wheat exporter, but it had more to lose than some of their competitors. U.S. wheat farmers are dependent on export markets for 45 percent of their wheat, versus nearly 70 percent for their Argentine counterparts.
