It is a busy week for transatlantic relations as bilateral discussions occurred via both the G-7 and the Munich Security Conference. Both the U.S. and EU are anxious to move beyond the challenges of the Trump era, but it isn’t easy. For one, Mr. Trump involved a change in style but not necessarily substance. The U.S. remains concerned about NATO funding, dependence on Russia for gas, Iranian nuclear compliance, and singling out American tech companies for new taxes. The EU itself has changed, realizing the need for greater autonomy in diplomacy, economics, and critical goods like PPE and semiconductors.
