Following is an update on the impact and ongoing issues related to the outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Since the first detection in January 2022, the disease has been detected in 37 states, but most of the cases have been wild birds (34 states) and then the second tier has been backyard flocks (22 states). For commercial flocks there have been detections in 16 states – of course, there are fewer states with commercial flocks compared to states with backyard flocks and wild birds.
