The November WASDE's surprising increase in the estimated U.S. national average corn yield warrants a fresh look at the nation's supply/demand dynamics. As noted here at the time, the biggest surprise in the November WASDE was the increase in the estimated U.S. national average corn yield when the widely-held assumption was that there would be a slight reduction. Furthermore, the increase of 1.9 bushels/acre from October was not minor. At 175.3 bushels/acre, the new estimate tops the old record-high yield set in 2014/15 by an extraordinary 4.3 bushels/acre! In analyzing the 2016/17 U.S. corn crop, NASS’s yield estimates have so far fallen in a very unusual pattern. The first survey-based estimate in August was 175.1 bushels/acre, which was f...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
