USDA’s April WASDE

The April WASDE is sometimes viewed as a way station between the end-of-March planting intentions and quarterly stocks reports and the May WASDE, which includes USDA projections of potential U.S. and world production along with supply/demand balances for the upcoming crop cycle. This is not to say that the April WASDE is not interesting; the updated production estimates for Argentina and Brazil will particularly grab a great deal of attention today. Following are the key numbers from this report: On balance, this month’s WASDE is about as unsurprising as it could be. USDA lowered Argentine soybean and corn production due to the drought and by amounts close to expectations. Brazilian soybean production was raised and its corn produc...

Market Commentary: Wow, Some Fun Information!

USDA’s much anticipated Prospective Plantings and Quarterly Stocks reports had few shockers, but they did shuffle the board a bit. First, the top line stuff: Corn Planted area was expected to drop due to higher input costs and lower prices, but USDA’s 90-million-acre number was at t...

Illuminating the value of technical research

On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
