Vietnam’s soymeal use has been rising at about 7 percent per year. However, the outbreak of African Swine Fever has caused a drop-off in pork production and a concurrent increase in chicken output. Since poultry is more efficient than swine at conversion of plant protein into muscle tissue, the drop in the rate of increase in soymeal is understandable. In 2018, pork production fell by 14.6 percent while poultry production increased by 10 percent. Soymeal consumption rose by just 1.2 percent. In 2020, pork production is forecast to fall by 5.25 percent while poultry output rises by 5.4 percent. WPI’s team was retained by the governing board of a U.S. industry organization to review a decision, reached by vote, to invest significant assets into the development and management of an export trading company. WPI’s team conducted a formal review of this decision and concluded that the current level of market saturation would limit the benefits of the investment. Based on WPI’s analysis and recommended actions, the board subsequently reversed its decision and undertook a strategic planning effort to identify more impactful investments.
