Now that the ag portion of the budget reconciliation bill has passed, there are still some big plans and major new initiatives planned by the Agriculture Committee leadership and USDA, including racial equity initiatives and climate policies. Already, several Senate Agriculture Committee members have introduced a bill for USDA to purchase farmland offered for sale, at market prices, to provide in 160-acre parcels to Black farmers. Both chairs of the Senate and House Agriculture Committees are scheduling very early hearings on climate policies. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants.
