WTO Makeover; Taxing Success; Ring-Fence Skepticism

WTO Makeover There is reasonable concern that the Trump administration is blocking the appointment of appellant judges at the WTO as part of a goal to implode the current binding dispute settlement process. It would be Trumpian to believe that the U.S. would fare better by returning to the negotiated settlement system that existed under the old GATT. However, a far better focus for leveraging any change at the WTO would be to pressure its return to working as a trade liberalization body rather than just another development agency as currently envisioned by its Third World majority.   Taxing Success The skyrocketing valuations of U.S.-based Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google and Amazon (FAMGA) had been driving Wall Street higher but...

From WPI Consulting

Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
