When it comes to almonds, the U.S. is the world’s largest producer by far. It produces over 80 percent of the world’s almond crop. However, when it comes to walnuts, China retains the lead, but the hard-fought fight has gotten closer. A decade ago, China produced almost 46 percent of all the world’s walnuts and the U.S. just 27 percent. Production has been expanding in both countries but at a faster rate in the U.S. The result is that today China’s share of global output has dropped to 44 percent while the American share now stands at 31 percent.
