Taiwan FTA Foolery

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is doubling down on her support of Taiwan and attack on China. She said a free trade agreement (FTA) with Taiwan “might be possible and soon.” Congressional Democrats have historically shunned FTA’s due to opposition from organized labor. There is a bill calling for such an FTA pending before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but it would likely need special language to ensure an agreement passes Congress without serious amendment. So-called fast track authority or Trade Promotion Authority expired over a year ago.  Meanwhile, China could respond by impeding trade access to the island.
