U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is doubling down on her support of Taiwan and attack on China. She said a free trade agreement (FTA) with Taiwan “might be possible and soon.” Congressional Democrats have historically shunned FTA’s due to opposition from organized labor. There is a bill calling for such an FTA pending before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but it would likely need special language to ensure an agreement passes Congress without serious amendment. So-called fast track authority or Trade Promotion Authority expired over a year ago. Meanwhile, China could respond by impeding trade access to the island. Communicating importance of value-added products
Facing increasing pressure to quantify the value of export promotion efforts to investors, a U.S. industry organization retained WPI to develop a quantitative model that better communicated the importance of exports. The resulting model concluded that value-added meat exports contributed $0.45 cents per bushel to the price of corn, increasing support for that sector’s financial support of WPI’s client. In addition to serving the red meat industry with this type of analysis, WPI has generated similar deliverables for the U.S. soybean and poultry/egg industries.
